Despite the current economic crisis
shared worldwide the 2009 New York International Auto Show showcased new
models of vehicles and prototypes galore. The Chevrolet Volt could be
just the spark GM needs to get that ball rolling again.
As explained
by the model/sales technician which shared the stage with Volt as you
turn on the ignition and the car runs at rest it is as quiet as a
turtle. That is only one of the many percs of the 3 years in the making
project.
It is an all electric car, and only uses a gasoline engine
to charge its batteries. That extra charge extends the range before next
plug in to around 250 miles. The Volt plugs into a standard outlet and
can be programmed to charge during times when rates are reduced.
On
the performance side of things the Volt goes from zero to sixty
in 8 to 9 seconds according to current GM estimates. You will never know what gear you're in because electric engines
have no gears So the ride is one seamless acceleration with occasional
braking. The Volt is GM's most aerodynamic car so not only are its
lines handsome but it helps with that range before charge along with
its special tires.
Will the 1.4L four-cylinder, lithium-ion so
called affordable sedan appeal to the masses? Chevy has until late 2010
to work out any kinks and promote what I think is an interesting and
game changing car. I think I'd try it as a fleet vehicle as a rental
first before I commit to this or any other hybrid type vehicle.
